Why Arch-Support Shoes Made My Plantar Fasciitis Worse

"Arch support is good for plantar fasciitis." I believed this, bought 2 pairs of Nike arch-support running shoes, and wore them for 2 years. Result? Zero recovery.

Why I Bought Arch-Support Shoes

It seemed intuitive. The plantar fascia is in the arch of the foot, so shoes that support the arch should help, right? So I bought Nike arch-support running shoes.

YouTube said shoes were important, but there was no clear, specific recommendation. So I just went with the 'arch support' label.

What Happened Over 2 Years

From 2023 to 2024, I wore 2 pairs of Nike arch-support running shoes. It's not that they made it suddenly worse — they just kept the pain constant. No help walking, no help running. I endured the pain and kept wearing them.

I didn't realize how important shoe choice was. 'It's arch-support, so it must be good' — I didn't question it. YouTube said good shoes matter, but there was no clear recommendation of which specific model to get. So I gave up searching and kept wearing the arch-support shoes.

During this time, I was doing daily cream massage, wearing double socks, taking hospital medication — all while wearing arch-support shoes. None of it worked. Looking back, taking medicine while wearing shoes that made it worse — of course nothing improved.

Air Force 1s Hurt Less

One day I put on Nike Air Force 1s. They have a flat sole. They don't press on the arch.

My feet hurt less.

That's when it hit me: 'The arch-support shoes were the problem. I wore the wrong shoes for 2 years.' I ditched the arch shoes and switched to Air Force 1s immediately.

Why Arch-Support Makes It Worse

The plantar fascia is already inflamed. Micro-tears have been repeating, leaving it swollen and painful.

Arch-support shoes push up on the arch from below. It's like constantly pressing on an already sore spot. Every step, every stride pushes into the arch.

Same principle as when a massage ball made it worse for 2 weeks. Stimulating inflamed tissue increases pain. Arch-support shoes were doing that with every single step.

So What Shoes Should You Wear?

Based on my experience, the ranking is clear:

  1. New Balance 1080 Excellent cushioning without pressing on the arch. The best.
  2. Nike Air Force 1 Flat sole. Doesn't irritate the arch. Okay.
  3. Flat shoes in general Better than arch-support.
  4. Arch-support running shoes Avoid if you have plantar fasciitis.

Counterintuitive but true. It doesn't 'support' the arch — it 'irritates' it. If you have plantar fasciitis, avoid arch-support shoes. Don't waste 2 years like I did.

When I later switched to New Balance 1080s — the first time I put them on, I felt like flying. Cushioning that wraps your foot without pressing on the arch. Running in those shoes started the positive cycle of recovery.
